How to connect to a proxy server

     Many students encounter problems when they try to connect to the internet from university campus. I have same trouble when I tried to connect to university proxy server. So i decided to write this tutorial to help you to configure your network connection . All is very simple if you follow the steps below.

       Step 1.

     First of all make sure that the network cable is connect to your computer. Then open Control Panel and click on View network status and tasks like in image.

       Step2.

     Now you have a new window open. In left side, on top, you must see a list of options. Click to Change adapter settings. If you can't find it, look over the picture below.

       Step 3.

     In this step you have opened on the screen Network Connections window. Here you find some internet connection types (eg. Ethernet, WiFi,.. ), but only the Ethernet connection interest us in this tutorial. So right click on the ethernet connection like in picture and then click on properties.

     Ok. You have now opened the Ethernet Properties window. Go to the bottom of the list and select (just one click) the Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4). The properties buton is now available, so click it.

         In the IPv4 window you need to do 4 steps like in image.

                1. Select "Use the following IP adress" 

                2&3. Ask the network administrator of university for your unique IP adress, subnet mask and default gateway and write them like in picture (picture is for UPT).

                * For UPT (Universitatea Politehnica Timisoara):

                                  -IP Adress: 10.C.N.U

                                  -Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

                                  -Default gateway: (optional 10.1.1.1)

where C=the number of the student hostel, N=room number, U=a random number (0,180)

                 4. Click ok.

         Now your network adapter is ready for use proxy settings. 

            Step 4.

         Open your internet browser (for example I used Chrome, but you can use any browser). Go to "Settings" (like in the picture below).

          In settings window go to Network Settings (Chrome: scroll down >  show advanced settings).

Now open proxy settings menu.

          In the picture above you see the button for proxy settings menu in Google Chrome. After you opened this menu, you must go to LAN settings button.

          In the Lan settings window you must select "Automatically detect settings" option. After that select "Use a proxy server for your LAN" option like in image. And the last steep is to insert the University main IP and port (ask your network administrator for them) and click OK. For UPT ( Universitatea Politehnica Timisoara ) the IP is 10.1.1.1 and the port 3128. See the picture below if you not understand this step.
